Optimizing Systems, Elevating Care: My Passion for Dentistry

By Shelbey Arevalo March 10, 2025

Dentistry has been the foundation of my career for over 15 years, and every single day, I wake up in love with my career all over again. From my early days as a dental assistant to my current role as a dental biller, certified medical-dental coder, and practice consultant, my passion

has only grown stronger. I thrive on optimizing systems, helping providers expand their offerings, and creating streamlined financial processes that support both the practice and the patient.

I’ve always believed that dentistry is about more than just procedures—it’s about people, efficiency, and making sure that practices run as smoothly as possible so they can focus on delivering exceptional care.

A Passion for Helping Providers Thrive

There’s nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a practice transform—when an office goes from struggling with reimbursement bottlenecks to confidently navigating medical-dental cross-coding, when a provider expands their services to include sleep medicine, TMJ and oral surgery, or when a team gains a newfound understanding of the financial and systemic side of patient care.

That’s where I come in. My expertise lies in breaking down complex billing systems, maximizing insurance reimbursements, and ensuring that dental teams feel empowered to offer life-changing treatments while getting compensated for their work.

Right now, I’m expanding my focus even further—diving deep into obstructive sleep apnea, TMJ, oral surgery, and oral-systemic health integration to help practices not only grow but better serve their patients through comprehensive, whole-body health solutions.

This work is more than a job to me—it’s a calling.

Turning Passion into Advocacy

In 2023, I started a patient advocacy initiative after seeing a massive gap in the way patients navigated dental care. The need was so apparent that I knew I had to take action—and what began as a personal mission quickly became something much bigger.

I founded the Patient Advocate Program, now a nonprofit dedicated to bridging the gap between patients and providers. Too often, patients are left confused about their treatment, insurance coverage, and financial responsibilities. Seniors, those with disabilities, and individuals with sleep medicine needs are especially vulnerable. They need a voice, a guide, an advocate.

This work fuels my soul, and as I pursue my Board-Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) certification, I’m more committed than ever to making real change—not just for patients but for the providers who care for them.

Optimizing Systems: The Key to Success

The part of my job that excites me the most? System optimization. There is nothing more satisfying than transforming a chaotic, inefficient process into a seamless, profitable system.

Here are three key strategies I focus on when helping practices thrive:

Maximizing Reimbursements – Understanding medical-dental coding, insurance navigation, and cross-coding strategies can be the difference between losing revenue and unlocking new financial opportunities for providers.

Expanding Service Offerings – Practices that incorporate TMJ treatments, oral surgery, and sleep medicine not only provide essential care but also open doors to additional streams of revenue. Education and integration are key.

Bridging the Gap with Patients – Advocacy isn’t just for patients—it’s for providers, too. When a practice has strong financial systems, clear patient communication, and a well-trained team, everyone wins.

A Future Where Dentistry Thrives

At the heart of it all, my goal is simple: to be of service, to share my knowledge, and to create lasting, positive change in the dental industry.

Every challenge I solve, every system I optimize, and every provider I support brings me one step closer to my vision of a dental world where practices are thriving, patients are empowered, and providers feel confident in their financial and clinical success.

I’d love to connect and continue this journey together.
